In this project, we analyzed the complexity of a piece of music – from its overall dramaturgy and rhythms to the finer details. The goal was to identify visual structures that we could accurately translate into an animation.

We learned to understand the grammar of musical language in order to recognize parallels in visual language and ultimately translate the same content visually.

Process

At the beginning, we created a semantic differential and a moodboard to identify adjectives and associations that reflected the mood of the music piece. After analyzing the structure and dramaturgy of the piece, we divided it into sections in the form of a notation, initially with some difficulty, through repeated listening and comparison with visual waveforms. Next, we developed a visual repertoire using the morphological matrix, which we were then to represent within a system.

An important aspect was that the visual translation had to be presented as a moving image, meaning we had to take time and movement into account.

Result

In the end, we focused on the implementation to determine whether the animation was technically feasible.

I was mainly responsible for the technical creation of the animation, while my classmate Yalcin designed a fictional event poster, which was presented during the exhibition at the university. Our classmate Jonah took on the creation of the documentation to visually capture and make our design decisions comprehensible.
